Groceries  in Providenciales

June, 2006 submitted by " the Editor "
Graceway IGA Supermarket

The IGA supermarket on Leeward Highway in Providenciales is a full service supermarket. They appear to have everything you would expect of a large supermarket. Although the prices for imported items, everything is imported, can be expensive. On site bakery and butcher.
Here is a sampling of the items I purchased and their cost at the time:

Sliced White Bread (store made)- $1.99
1 Gallon jug Zephyr Hills Spring water - $1.45
6 pack of Corona (bottle, warm or cold)- $13.99
Golden Delicious Apples -$1.99 lb
Bananas- $1.09 lb
Juicy Juice 46 ounce can -$3.69
Hershey Chocolate Bar - $.75
Dole Lettuce in a bag - $2.99

Refrigerated items will have a much higher price. Tropicana orange juice (64 oz carton) cost over $5.00.

The store has the generic or store brand items available at better prices. Service is good , store is clean and there were no lines during the "off" hours. It gets very busy after work.

There at least two "bulk" stores on Provo. I believe one is Price Club and the other, I can't remember the name,is newer. Both are locate don Leeward Highway as well. If you are going to buy some bulk items you will save money, but the bulk stores may have limited to certain products.

Snorkeling  in Providenciales

Snorkeling & Diving

The snorkeling and diving are incredible in Providenciales. The waters are crystal clear and calm and the aquatic life and reefs are so beautiful. We have been to many islands but always return to Provo (hopefully again in 2002). I would highly recommend hiring someone to take you to offshore reefs to snorkel in addition to going to White House Reef.

Snorkeling

The snorkeling is great!  It is the best I have seen yet, with excellent visibility. We saw a small Grouper, a Barracuda, beautiful fans, coral, parrot fish, yellow snapper, etc. right off the beach behind Coral Gardens resort, at Grace Bay.  But sadly, it won't be around if people don't take care of it.
eg. I saw a family, their early teen children tromping, and thrashing right around the coral, undoubtedly destroying what took nature many, many years to create.

If you truly enjoy all the color, and life that the reefs have to offer,

PLEASE, DON'T TOUCH THE CORAL, FINS, HANDS, OR OTHERWISE!!!!!!!(THIS WILL KILL THE REEF)

PLEASE, DON'T KICK UP SAND AROUND THE CORAL!!!!!!!!(THIS WILL KILL THE REEF)

PLEASE WEAR A T-SHIRT, OR DIVE SKIN INSTEAD OF WEARING SUNSCREEN WHEN SNORKELING OR SWIMMING OVER THE CORAL!!!!!
(THIS TOO WILL KILL THE CORAL)

I'm sorry if I sound "preachy", TAKE CARE, AND ENJOY TAKING CARE OF THE REEF SYSTEMS!

Smith's Reef is one of finer areas for snorkeling due to the depth of water and also because it is relatively unknown. Rent a Jeep to travel the island. There is parking available at Smith's reef once you cross the bridge and turn left from Turtle Cove. It can be very choppy due to onshore breeze. Make sure you go early morning or when the wind is off shore. The depth of water is more conducive to snorkling here so as you don't fear touching the coral. When you park you walk along the beach only five minutes and there are orange markers in the water to aid swimmers. We saw a turtle, rays and a few barracuda staring back at us. Great visibility and great photo opportunity. The White house is also good. Beaches resort bring their boat in for their guest to snorkel. It is only about five minutes from Beaches and a good forty minutes from Ocean Club or Allegro (Turkoise Reef). We rented the Jeep and went over to Sapodilla Bay (spelling?). This is a beautiful spot and great snorkeling along the rocky cliff shoreline to the west. Club Med also has small reefs right off shore (less than 200 yards) and so does Allegro or Turkoise Reef resort when we stayed there in April 98.

There are at least three spots where you can snorkel off the beach on Providenciales.

Malcolm Roads beach - which is only accessible by boat or 4 wheel drive vehicle (I have seen regular cars make it, but why take a chance of getting stuck, it's a long walk back. Rent a jeep for one day.) Not great but usually some fish and people said they have seen turtles.

Smith's reef - Turtle cove area. Very nice little reef area, still was 2 yrs ago anyway.

White House reef - A rental house on grace bay beach. About 10 -15 minute walk on beach from
Sandals Beaches. Straight out from the house.

Beaches and People in Providenciales
The place with the water & sand not the resort

June 27, 2000 submitted by "Maria"

The beaches are some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. The sand is white and the water is turquoise blue and amazingly clear.

The people are quite nice although we found them to be slightly reserved - not unfriendly - just not as outgoing as in the southern US! The waiters and waitresses we encountered were, for the most part, quite detached and not as warm as we hoped, but again, not unfriendly.

There are tons of wonderful restaurants on the island. One of the best is Coyaba at Coral Gardens. Very creative chef & pretty pricey, but quite good.

Actually, most all of the restaurants are fairly pricey so be ready for it. We spent around $100 for dinner for two, which included 2 frozen mixed drinks each, one appetizer, two entrees, and one dessert.

We also enjoyed Sharkbite (not as expensive as the others) and Hemingways (at The Sands). We didn't have a bad meal on the island. The Tiki Hut was also good, but the service was horrendous even for island standards (where service is expected to be slow). We finally had to go in search of the waitress when we needed her and several customers got disgusted and got up and left. We gave
it a second chance and had pretty much the same bad service. They have an excellent breakfast menu, though, so you might want to try your luck.

Taxi Service  in Providenciales
February  12, 2001 submitted by "KTG"

Taxi service with one in particular, was horrible. It's a husband and wife company. Very costly, very rude, and the cost, and arrangements were constantly changing. They like to put 15 people in a 10 seater van. Rude, rude, rude, and they like to take and take---so watch out! (TINA'S TAXI)
